The Northfield Arts Guild’s production of Meredith Willson’s The Music Man opens Friday, and I’m excited to see it for so many reasons, it’s hard to know where to start.

So I will lead with family. I have two family members in the cast: my husband, Steve, plays Oliver Hix, a member of the barbershop quartet; and my sister-in-law Beth is Eulalie MacKecknie Shinn, the mayor’s wife. My two older kids, Louisa and Sebastian, are in the tech booth running lights and sound. And there’s another family connection to the production as well – inside the theater lobby is an exhibit I have put together about my real-life music man ancestor, my great-grandfather G. Oliver Riggs.

Thanks to everyone involved in putting this monster together, especially to Rob Schanilec and his crew at By All Means Graphics, 17 Bridge Square, which is serving as VBF headquarters during the festival.

Today is the 150th anniversary of the surrender of Vicksburg. My great-great-grandfather Jasper Riggs was in that Mississippi city on that day, July 4, 1863, along with two of his brothers. He was 20 years old and served with the 45th Illinois Infantry. In recognition of its service during the siege, his regiment was given the honor of leading the Union troops into the city, and its flag was raised at the courthouse along with the Stars and Stripes.
